Jeff Smith’s decade-long tenure as Head of Global Human Resources at BlackRock transformed how the investment giant approached talent management. As a member of BlackRock’s Global Executive Committee and Global Operating Committee, Smith served as a primary advisor to the CEO while overseeing the Management Development and Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors.
“Leaders need to drive change and help drive strategy and create culture,” Smith emphasizes when discussing organizational effectiveness. His psychology background—with a BS from the University of Connecticut and a PhD in industrial-organizational psychology from Virginia Tech—provided him with unique insights into workplace dynamics.
At BlackRock, Smith led the transformation of the firm’s talent and diversity agenda to support business growth through both organic expansion and multiple acquisitions. His work extended beyond traditional HR functions to include strategic business planning.
“HR is a business in its own right and literally enables every single thing that happens in a company,” Smith notes. “Who you hire, creating performance standards, developing leaders…aligning incentives and compensation, and creating the right culture for the business to work and thrive.”
Before joining BlackRock in 2006, Smith gained valuable experience at Barclays Global Investors (which later merged with BlackRock), Time Warner, America Online, and as a Senior Consultant at Personnel Decisions International. These diverse roles helped shape his comprehensive approach to talent management.
Smith’s talent philosophy centers on finding the intersection between skills and passion. “Try to find work that sits at the intersection of what you naturally excel at and what you feel passionate about,” he advises. This approach not only benefits employees but creates more efficient organizations.
